Why is the NVR important?
The NVR is the operational centre of an IP-based CCTV system. It receives camera streams, stores recordings, controls schedules and provides access to live and archived footage. An undersized recorder or unsuitable storage can make a good camera installation unreliable when footage is actually needed.
We select the recorder for the number of cameras, their resolution, available bandwidth and planned expansion. The NVR should also be installed in a controlled location, not left next to a public monitor or in an obvious place that can be easily reached.
How much CCTV storage is required?
Retention depends on camera count, resolution, frame rate, compression, recording mode and the amount of activity in the scene. Continuous recording uses more capacity than schedules or event-based recording. We calculate storage before choosing disks and explain the assumptions used in the estimate.
Drives intended for monitoring systems are designed for continuous recording workloads. Capacity should include the required retention period and a reasonable margin, while the recorder should report disk errors before recordings are lost.
Recording schedules and finding an event
A practical system needs more than live view. We configure the correct time, recording schedules, camera names and archive structure so users can quickly identify the relevant location and period. During handover we show authorised users how to search footage and export a selected fragment.
We also verify recording after configuration. Each camera is checked in the archive, not only in live view. This catches missing schedules, time errors and storage problems before they become critical.
Remote viewing from a phone or computer
Remote access can be useful for a homeowner, manager or authorised employee, but it should not rely on one shared administrator account. We create separate users and limit permissions to the cameras and functions required for each role.
We configure the mobile application and desktop access, then test connectivity from outside the local network. Administrative passwords should be strong and changed when an authorised person leaves the organisation or no longer needs access.
Security of the recorder and accounts
The NVR, cameras and network equipment require updates and controlled access. We review default accounts, unused permissions, remote access settings and the location of the recorder. Where appropriate, the system can be separated from the main user network and placed behind properly configured network security.
Remote viewing does not replace local recording. A stable system should continue recording on site even if the internet connection is temporarily unavailable.
Maintenance and expansion
CCTV maintenance includes checking disk health, recording continuity, time synchronisation, camera availability and remote access. We can also help after a password change, router replacement, mobile phone change or system expansion.
Before adding cameras, we verify NVR channel capacity, PoE power, network bandwidth and available storage. This allows existing infrastructure to be reused where it remains suitable.
